Dodge Becomes The Latest Automaker To Release A Special Pursuit SUV
Just when you thought you had a grasp on every type of police vehicle to look out for while driving, here comes one more vehicle that you need to be aware of when hitting the road. First, police & fire departments started opting for specialized Tahoe PPVs(police pursuit vehicle), then along comes Ford with their Explorer & Taurus Interceptors. But, the latest automaker from the “Big 3″ to release a police-specific vehicle is Dodge. And even though they’ve already shown their card with the Charger pursuit sedan, Dodge is also preparing the Durango for pursuit duty with the Special Service edition.
What makes this Durango different from the models sold in showrooms is the fact that the Special Services Durango receives heavy-duty engine components, such as a heavy-duty engine cooler, brakes, water pump, & 220-amp alternator. Other upgrades are independent suspension & electronic roll mitigation to keep the Durango upside while on high-speed pursuits, but other than that, the police-issued Durango still contains the same powertrain as the civilian models(3.6-liter Pentastar V6 & 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engines).
Orders are being taken as of now by the Chrysler Group, so we can expect to see these “specialized” Durango trucks on the road just in time for those summer cruises. One word of advice: Keep your eyes & ears open, because you’ll never know what may be pulling up behind you…
