If you haven’t heard the name Rockie Fresh yet, trust me you will soon. At the young age of only 19, this Chicago native is making quite a name for himself. His mixtape, The Other Side, generated a lot of buzz with over 30,000 downloads and counting and established Rockie as the next rising star to come out of Chicago. We were able to catch up with Rockie at Reggies Rock Club this weekend and talked with him about his current mixtape, upcoming mixtape and his latest project he worked on with Joel Madden from Good Charlotte.

The Other Side is one of those mixtapes you can listen to without skipping any songs, it’s really that good. On one song in particular, The Worth feat Mike Golden, you go against the norm of talking about the cars, hoes and money and you actually give some really smart advice to people about working hardand not faking it till you make it but living within your means. How, at 19, did you develop this maturity level and individualism as a rapper?

RF- For me I grew up in a Christian household so #1 – I have very religious values, #2 – I have both of my parents in the household and with me having my dad around he instilled a lot of input in the songs that I rap about. On another note, I genuinely just want to see the world that I live in become a better place, and I feel like there are certain issues that need to be discussed and I try to do that in my music.

You worked on The Other Side with artists like Naledge from Kidz in the Hall and Rich Hil, can we expect any artists on your upcoming new mixtape and if so who?

RF- I can’t really say right now, but I have some really crazy features stuff lined up for the project. Also a lot of really renowned producers working on this project as well. The last mixtape was produced entirely by the Cartoonz and those are my homies and will have some records on this mixtape, but I also have some other producers that I’m working with too.

Saw that you were just in LA working with Joel Madden from Good Charlotte. Can you give us any details on what you are working on with him?

RF- I did this show in Jersey at this festival called Bamboozle and that’s where I met his brother Josh Madden. He saw my show and really like it so he reached out to me and put me and Joel in contact. Joel then flew me out to LA on last Sunday and we got in the studio for about 3 days and came out with 2 really strong records. Working with him was a great experience and we established a good friendship as well. Every time I go to LA now that’s gonna be someone I’m going to link up with

When is your new mixtape dropping?

RF- Look for it late this summer
Where can we find your mixtape as well as any information about your upcoming shows?
RF- Just go to www.RockieFresh.com and the mixtape is on there to listen to and download. Also check me out this week at House of Blues Chicago and the Metro – a list of my other tour dates are on the website as well.
